St. Hedwig math lessons are putting collaboration and persistence at the centre of Grade 6 problem-solving, according to a new Durham Catholic District School Board update.
In its October 26 announcement, the board said Grade 6 teachers at St. Hedwig Catholic School have been working with a Numeracy Intervention Teacher as part of an ongoing effort to improve mathematics achievement.
The Oshawa school is located at 421 Olive Avenue.
Learning through discussion and mistakes
The classroom approach draws on the Ontario Ministry of Education’s High Impact Instructional Practices in Mathematics document. The board says instruction emphasizes perseverance, working through challenging problems and treating mistakes as a constructive part of learning.
Students are using different strategies to tackle a mathematical problem together and talking through their thinking with classmates, the board reported.
The St. Hedwig math update describes classroom practice rather than a new test result. It does not provide assessment scores or claim a measured improvement in achievement.
