A 29-year-old male of no fixed address has been arrested and formally charged following a series of disturbing criminal incidents at a prominent shopping mall in Pickering. Brandon Edsel Sevilla-Zelaya was taken into custody by the Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) on April 25, 2026, after an intensive search aided by the local community. The arrest was the direct result of the public’s assistance following a “Help Solve a Crime” social media post by investigators, which helped identify the individual linked to alleged indecent acts and sexual assault.
The investigation was initially launched following a report on March 26 at a retail store located within The Shops at Pickering City Centre. According to police allegations, the sexual assault suspect was using a changeroom on the premises when he intentionally exposed himself to both staff members and customers. This initial incident of indecent exposure created a significant safety concern for both the employees and the shoppers present at the time.
Escalation of Alleged Criminal Activity
The situation escalated significantly just one week later. Police allege that the sexual assault suspect returned to the same shopping centre on April 2. During this second visit, investigators claim the suspect proceeded to sexually assault an employee of the establishment. The individual managed to flee the scene before responding officers arrived, sparking a weeks-long search that eventually utilized public outreach to secure a positive identification.
While the Durham Regional Police Service confirmed that no physical injuries were sustained by the victim during the April 2 encounter, the psychological impact and breach of public safety remain a primary focus of the investigation. Following his arrest in late April, Sevilla-Zelaya was formally processed and hit with a battery of legal charges.
Charges and Request for Public Information
As of May 1, 2026, the sexual assault suspect faces the following charges:
-
Several counts of alleged sexual assault.
-
Theft.
-
Failure to comply with probation.
The DRPS has stated that these charges have not yet been proven in a court of law. However, due to the nature of the alleged behavior in a high-traffic public environment, investigators remain deeply concerned that there may be other victims who have not yet come forward. The police are urging anyone who may have had a similar encounter with the suspect at The Shops at Pickering City Centre, or who possesses further information regarding his activities, to contact the Durham Regional Police directly.
For residents or visitors who wish to provide information but prefer to remain anonymous, tips can be submitted through Crime Stoppers.
