Durham Regional Police are investigating a disturbing incident that occurred in downtown Oshawa on the evening of March 19, 2026, where a security guard was assaulted after attempting to intervene in a parking dispute.

The incident unfolded at approximately 10:00 p.m. at the Mary Street Parkade, a public parking structure located in Oshawa’s downtown area. According to police reports, the incident began when a male suspect attempted to block and damage a vehicle that was attempting to exit the parking structure. The situation escalated when the suspect’s actions were noticed by a security guard, who took it upon himself to intervene.

In an effort to stop the suspect from causing further damage, the security guard attempted to control the situation. However, the situation quickly became violent. The suspect reportedly assaulted the security guard, causing injury before fleeing the scene.

The injured security guard was able to provide a description of the suspect before receiving medical attention. Police arrived shortly after the altercation, but the suspect had already fled the area.

According to Durham Regional Police, the suspect is described as a white male between the ages of 30 to 45 years old. He has a large build and is said to have black hair and a black beard. At the time of the incident, the suspect was wearing a black hoodie and grey pants.

The security guard, who was attempting to protect the property and ensure the safety of others in the area, has been commended for his bravery in stepping in to try to resolve the situation, despite the violent outcome. Thankfully, the injuries sustained by the security guard were non-life-threatening, and he is currently recovering from the incident.

The police have issued a public appeal for information regarding the incident. They are particularly interested in gathering video footage that may have been captured by cellphones, dash cams, or surveillance cameras in the area. This will help them further investigate the assault and locate the suspect.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact Detective Barr of the Central East Division Criminal Investigations Branch at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 2703. For those who wish to remain anonymous, tips can be submitted through Durham Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or online at Durham Crime Stoppers. Tipsters may be eligible for a cash reward if their information leads to an arrest.

This incident has drawn attention to the issue of public safety and the escalation of minor disputes into violent confrontations. Oshawa residents are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to local authorities to help prevent similar situations from occurring.

While it is clear that the suspect and the security guard were previously unknown to each other, this is a reminder to be cautious when dealing with potential conflicts in public spaces. The incident highlights the importance of community safety, and how crucial it is for bystanders to step in when necessary but to also prioritize their own well-being.
