A focused effort by Durham Regional Police to combat retail theft in Oshawa has led to a significant number of arrests and criminal charges. The ‘Safe Shop’ initiative, which concentrated on the retail shopping area around the busy intersection of Harmony Road and Taunton Road in north Oshawa, resulted in six arrests over the past weekend. These arrests were made as part of an ongoing effort to deter criminal activity and ensure the safety of both the community and the shopping district.

The initiative was designed to increase police visibility and presence in the area, targeting retail theft and associated crimes. By maintaining a visible police presence at local shopping plazas, officers were able to act as both a deterrent and a source of security for the public. The results were swift, with six individuals arrested, leading to numerous criminal charges, including theft, and one adult diversion program.

Since its launch in January 2026, the ‘Safe Shop’ initiative has been highly effective, contributing to 85 arrests and the laying of 92 charges in connection with retail theft. Additionally, 13 Provincial Offence Notices have been issued, and 17 individuals have been diverted through adult diversion programs, aimed at addressing the root causes of criminal behavior.

The initiative, which has been funded through the Community Safety and Policing Grant, is part of a broader effort to combat retail crime and make shopping areas safer for residents. Durham Regional Police have expressed their commitment to continuing the initiative throughout 2026, with plans to expand the program to other high-risk retail areas in Durham Region.

In addition to its immediate impact on retail theft, the ‘Safe Shop’ initiative serves to raise awareness about the issue of theft and its broader consequences on the local economy and community well-being. Retail theft not only affects the businesses directly involved but also has a ripple effect on the community, increasing prices and creating a sense of insecurity.

The initiative is especially important in Oshawa, one of the larger cities in Durham Region, where shopping areas often see a high volume of foot traffic. By addressing retail theft in these busy areas, Durham Regional Police are working to reduce crime and make the community feel safer.

Local residents have responded positively to the heightened police presence, appreciating the peace of mind it provides while shopping. Oshawa, along with nearby communities like Pickering, Whitby, Ajax, and Clarington, will likely benefit from the ongoing focus on reducing retail crime.

The success of the ‘Safe Shop’ initiative marks a positive step forward in improving safety and security in Durham Region. Durham Regional Police are determined to continue their efforts, ensuring that retail theft remains a priority as they work toward creating safer communities across the region.
