Police across several Ontario regions are warning homeowners about a growing trend of residential break-ins targeting properties that back onto parks, trails, ravines, and other greenspaces.
Halton Regional Police (HRPS), which serves Oakville, Burlington, Milton, and Halton Hills, say suspects are increasingly using nearby greenspaces as cover to access homes through rear doors and windows. Investigators believe organized criminal groups are responsible, often moving quickly from one neighbourhood to another and targeting multiple homes in a short time before relocating.
Police say suspects typically wear dark clothing, gloves, facial coverings, and backpacks. Once inside a home, they act quickly—usually ransacking bedrooms and other key areas in search of cash, jewelry, luxury items, and government identification. Many of the incidents are completed within minutes, allowing suspects to flee without being detected.
“Addressing residential break and enters is a priority,” Halton police said in a statement. “We have increased patrols in affected neighbourhoods, particularly those backing onto trail systems and greenspaces, and deployed additional investigative resources.”
Investigators are actively reviewing surveillance footage, canvassing for video evidence, and analyzing crime patterns as the investigations continue.
Police Safety Tips for Homeowners
To reduce the risk of becoming a target, police recommend residents take the following precautions:

Lock and secure all doors, windows, and fenced yard gates

Install shatter-resistant glass film, upgraded deadbolts, and door reinforcement hardware

Use a home security system with audible alarms and CCTV cameras (interior and exterior)

Install outdoor motion-activated lighting

Leave interior lights, music, or other noise on when away

Dogs can act as an effective deterrent

Trim hedges and greenery to improve visibility around the home

Notify trusted neighbours if away for an extended period or consider a house sitter
