Durham Regional Police have issued a traffic alert for the Township of Uxbridge, warning motorists of extremely slippery and dangerous road conditions caused by worsening winter weather.
According to Environment Canada, snow squalls off Georgian Bay are expected to re-intensify through Wednesday and possibly into Thursday, particularly affecting northern Durham Region. Reduced visibility, blowing snow and additional snowfall of 10 to 20 centimetres are expected.
High winds are further complicating conditions in Uxbridge, with gusts reaching up to 45 km/h, causing drifting snow and rapidly deteriorating visibility on open roads.
Police are specifically advising drivers to avoid Lake Ridge Road near Scugog Line 12, citing near-zero visibility, drifting snow and extremely icy surfaces. Motorists are urged to use alternate routes whenever possible.
Drivers who must travel are asked to slow down, increase following distance and use extreme caution. Drifting snow is also affecting several other rural roads across the township.
Due to the hazardous conditions, the Township of Uxbridge has temporarily removed snowplows from some rural routes, stating that operating equipment during whiteout conditions poses a serious safety risk to operators and the public. Full winter maintenance will resume once conditions improve.
Police and municipal officials warn that travel may become hazardous very quickly, with sudden whiteouts and possible road closures. Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel and prepare for rapidly changing conditions.
