The Durham Regional Police Service is currently investigating a disturbing incident that occurred in Oshawa this past weekend, involving a reported assault with a noxious substance and a theft. On Saturday evening, authorities responded to reports of a disturbance near the intersection of Cedar Street and Thomas Street. The event, which took place at approximately 8:40 p.m. on April 25, 2026, has led police to launch a search for multiple suspects believed to be responsible for the unprovoked attack on local residents.

According to the information provided by investigators, a group of four males were engaged in a recreational activity when they were approached by a larger group of individuals. The victims were playing basketball at the time of the confrontation. The situation escalated when the suspects allegedly deployed a noxious substance, which police describe as being similar to bear spray, directed at the victims. This action forced the individuals to immediately disperse and flee the area to escape the effects of the chemical spray.

In addition to the chemical assault, the incident also involved a theft of personal property. Before making their escape from the scene, the suspects managed to steal a bicycle belonging to one of the victims. Following the theft and the spraying of the substance, the group of males was seen fleeing the area on foot. Police reports indicate that the suspects were last seen running in a northerly direction, specifically heading toward the area of Cedar Street and Wentworth Street West.

Investigators have released detailed descriptions of the individuals they are currently seeking to identify in connection with this crime. The suspects are believed to be at least six in number, all described as male. Authorities have estimated their age range to be between 16 and 20 years old. A distinctive feature of their attire was that all individuals were wearing ski masks and dressed entirely in dark clothing. These details are being circulated in hopes that the public can assist in identifying the group.

As the investigation continues, the Central East Criminal Investigations Branch is actively seeking evidence to assist in identifying those responsible. Police are urging anyone who may have been in the vicinity of Cedar Street and Thomas Street on Saturday evening to come forward. Specifically, officers are looking for residents or businesses in the area that may have surveillance footage, dash cam recordings, or cellphone video that captured the incident or the suspects fleeing the scene.

Individuals with direct information regarding this incident are encouraged to contact the lead investigator handling the case. D/Cst. Cole of the Central East Criminal Investigations Branch can be reached by phone at 1-888-579-1520, extension 1705. Police hope that speaking with witnesses will help piece together the full timeline of events and lead to the apprehension of the suspects involved in this act of violence in the Oshawa community.

For those who wish to provide information but prefer to remain anonymous, alternative methods are available to submit tips. Information can be sent to Durham Regional Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or by visiting their official website at www.durhamregionalcrimestoppers.ca. Tipsters may be eligible for a cash reward for information leading to an arrest as police work to resolve this case.
