A Pickering woman, who turned her personal grief into a source of strength and purpose, is inviting the community to join her in celebrating the first anniversary of her business, Willow Tree Wellness & Psychotherapy. Julia Falzarano, a registered social worker and psychotherapist, opened the wellness centre on the day of her mother’s funeral in 2025. Despite facing the immense grief of losing her mother, Falzarano chose to create a supportive space where people could find healing and not face their struggles alone.
Reflecting on the difficult journey that led to the opening of Willow Tree Wellness & Psychotherapy, Falzarano shared, “It was really during the hardest time of my life.” The decision to launch the business amid such personal loss came from a deep desire to help others navigate their own toughest moments. Falzarano explained, “I think grief can push you in different directions and kind of expand your perspective on life. Things that once felt meaningful, you start to question, and I think that’s kind of where it came from.”
Willow Tree Wellness & Psychotherapy started as a solo practice, but in just one year, it has grown to a team of five therapists, including four BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour) therapists. This expansion reflects Falzarano’s commitment to ensuring that every client feels seen and safely represented, particularly in the context of mental health support.
The first year in business has been filled with a strong commitment to the community. Willow Tree has hosted free community workshops on mental health and a six-week complimentary grief support group for Durham residents, an initiative that Falzarano hopes to make a regular offering. “These workshops and support groups are part of my vision to provide accessible mental health care to all, especially during times of grief,” Falzarano said.
To mark the one-year anniversary, Falzarano is hosting a free community celebration on March 1, 2026, at Bare Yoga and Athletics in Pickering. The event will feature a variety of activities designed to bring the community together and celebrate the healing journey. From 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, there will be a community social with light snacks, flower-making, kids’ art kits, and face painting for children. From 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM, the event will offer a gentle yoga session for adults, providing a space for relaxation and mindfulness.
The celebration serves as an opportunity for Falzarano to give back to the community that has supported her and her business over the past year. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to help others find healing through this space,” she said. “This celebration is a chance to thank everyone who has been part of this journey.”
