A 39-year-old Pickering man has been charged months after a head-on collision in Scarborough killed his passenger and seriously injured two people in another vehicle.
Toronto police allege the accused was driving north on Sheppard Avenue East near Highway 401 at about 10 p.m. on Thursday, May 21, when his vehicle crossed the centre line and struck an oncoming car.
Passenger died after collision
The driver suffered life-threatening injuries. His passenger, a 42-year-old person, died as a result of the crash. Two occupants of the other vehicle were treated for serious injuries, according to police information reported September 3.
Police arrested William Howard Garrett of Pickering on Tuesday, September 1.
Four charges laid
Garrett is charged with operation of a conveyance causing death while impaired to any degree, dangerous operation of a conveyance causing death and two counts of dangerous operation causing bodily harm.
The allegations have not been proven in court. A charge is not a finding of guilt, and the accused is entitled to the presumption of innocence.
Police seek video and witnesses
The investigation remains active. Police are asking anyone who was in the area or has dash-camera or other video that may assist investigators to contact Toronto police.
The collision occurred on Sheppard Avenue East close to Highway 401, east of Durham Region. The direct local connection is the accused’s Pickering residence; the crash itself took place in Toronto.
