Pickering AMO Priorities Focus on Highway 7 and Health Care

Pickering AMO Priorities are taking centre stage at the Association of Municipalities of Ontario conference, where Mayor Kevin Ashe is pressing provincial officials on transportation and health-care investments he says are critical to the city’s future growth.

Ashe identified two major priorities for Pickering: accelerating the widening of Highway 7 and securing further investment in local health-care services.

The mayor scheduled discussions with Ontario Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria and Health Minister Sylvia Jones as municipal leaders from across the province gathered for the annual conference.

For Pickering, both issues are closely connected to rapid residential growth, economic development and increasing demand for public services.

Highway 7 Widening Seen as Growth Priority

One of the central Pickering AMO Priorities is accelerating the planned widening of Highway 7.

Ashe argues that improvements to the corridor are needed to support new housing and employment growth while helping improve transportation capacity in the expanding community.

Pickering is experiencing substantial development, particularly around its City Centre and other growth areas.

The city’s current community profile describes the Pickering City Centre redevelopment as a 55-acre master-planned community expected to include approximately 6,000 condominium residences alongside new public space.

Growth on that scale puts additional pressure on transportation infrastructure.

Highway improvements are therefore being positioned not simply as a traffic issue but as an important piece of Pickering’s broader housing and economic development strategy.

Health-Care Investment Also on Pickering Agenda

Health care is the second major priority being advanced by Pickering representatives.

Ashe is advocating for additional provincial investment, including support for the proposed Pickering Post-Acute Rehabilitation Centre.

Pickering’s official community profile confirms that the province has announced Durham Region’s first stand-alone Post-Acute Rehabilitation Centre for the city as part of Lakeridge Health’s broader redevelopment planning.

The city is also already home to the Jerry Coughlan Health & Wellness Centre, which provides surgical, diagnostic, urgent-care and other health services.

As Pickering’s population grows, municipal officials argue that expanded health infrastructure will be essential to improving access to physicians and other services.

Housing Infrastructure Funding Announced at AMO

The conference is also producing broader announcements that could affect municipalities across Ontario.

The federal and provincial governments announced up to $1 billion for infrastructure supporting new housing in eligible communities that do not collect development charges.

Each government is contributing $500 million.

The funding is aimed at roads, bridges, water systems and other infrastructure required to support residential development.

Applications are expected to open Oct. 29, with successful projects to be selected later.

This broader announcement overlaps with earlier provincial programs aimed at helping municipalities build infrastructure needed for new housing.

Ontario’s 2026 budget outlines major investments in municipal housing infrastructure, including water and other growth-supporting projects.

Recreation Funding Also Available

Another announcement at the conference involves Ontario’s Community Sport and Recreation Infrastructure Fund.

The province has expanded the program to $500 million, following an additional $300-million commitment in the 2026 budget.

The fund is intended to help municipalities build new recreation facilities or repair and modernize existing ones.

Ontario initially launched the program with $200 million to support new and improved sports and recreation infrastructure.

The latest intake could provide another opportunity for municipalities seeking support for local recreation projects.

Pickering Uses Conference to Push Local Agenda

While many provincial announcements affect communities across Ontario, the Pickering AMO Priorities remain focused on two immediate local needs: transportation capacity and health-care infrastructure.

Ashe’s meetings with provincial cabinet ministers are intended to keep Highway 7 widening and health-care investment on the government’s agenda as Pickering continues to grow.

The city’s rapid expansion means new homes must be supported by roads, medical services and other public infrastructure.

For Pickering officials, the AMO conference provides an opportunity to make those priorities directly to provincial decision-makers and seek commitments that could shape the city’s development for years to come.
