Two paramedics were taken to hospital after their ambulance was struck by a dump truck while responding to a collision on Highway 401 near Bowmanville on Monday morning.
Police said the incident occurred as emergency crews were attending the scene of a vehicle rollover in the westbound lanes near Bennett Road. A dump truck collided with the parked ambulance, pushing it into a fire truck that was also positioned at the scene.
The initial rollover and the subsequent crash involving emergency vehicles forced the closure of the westbound lanes of Highway 401 between Bennett Road and Highway 115 until just before noon.
The two paramedics were transported to hospital for treatment. Their conditions have not been disclosed.
Police have charged the 67-year-old driver of the dump truck with careless driving.
