A new craft sandwich shop is bringing fresh flavours and a continuation of a beloved local food tradition to Oshawa, adding another locally owned business to the growing food scene in Durham Region.

The Wichery, located at 650 King Street East in Oshawa, officially opened earlier this year and is already attracting attention from residents looking for high-quality, freshly prepared sandwiches and homemade menu items. The shop is operated by Bridget and Dan, who previously worked as longtime kitchen managers at the well-known Ann’s Deli, a local favourite that served the Oshawa community for years.

After spending nearly seven years managing the kitchen at Ann’s Deli, the pair decided to take the next step in their culinary journey by launching their own restaurant. Their new venture aims to continue the deli-style tradition while also introducing new menu ideas and bold flavours to customers in Oshawa.

The owners say their experience in managing a busy kitchen helped them develop many of the recipes and techniques they now use at The Wichery. Their goal is to combine fresh ingredients, slow-cooked meats and creative sandwich combinations to create a menu that stands out while still feeling familiar to the community.

Unlike many traditional restaurants, the menu at The Wichery is designed to change regularly. Daily specials are written on a blackboard, giving customers the opportunity to try different soups, sandwiches and combo meals depending on the day. The shop also offers a selection of freshly prepared salads and homemade desserts, including cookies and other sweet treats.

One of the most popular items currently available is the braised beef sandwich, which features marinated beef brisket served with pico de gallo, spicy salsa roja, mixed greens and mayonnaise. The combination of slow-cooked meat and fresh toppings has quickly become a customer favourite.

Another standout item is the pulled pork sandwich, made with slow-braised pork shoulder coated in a house-made barbecue sauce and chipotle mayo. The sandwich is finished with coleslaw, creating a balance of smoky, spicy and fresh flavours.

Customers can also enjoy lighter options such as the prosciutto sandwich, which includes house-made olive tapenade, crumbled goat cheese, mayonnaise and mixed greens served on fresh bread.

The owners say their culinary background includes experience in baking, slow-roasting meats and preparing house-made sauces, which allows them to focus on quality ingredients and handcrafted meals.

The opening of The Wichery represents more than just a new restaurant. For many Oshawa residents, it also continues the spirit of Ann’s Deli, which played an important role in the local food culture. Bridget and Dan hope their shop will provide the same sense of community and welcoming atmosphere.

Local restaurants like The Wichery contribute to the growing small business economy in Durham Region, while giving residents new places to gather, eat and support independent entrepreneurs.

The Wichery is currently open daily from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., welcoming customers looking for freshly made sandwiches and homemade menu items in the heart of Oshawa.
