Durham Region residents should prepare for a blustery Friday as Environment Canada forecasts strong wind gusts up to 60 km/h across southern Ontario, with temperatures reaching the mid-twenties.

The morning will start off sunny before becoming a mix of sun and cloud around noon in Oshawa and across the Greater Toronto Area. Wind gusts could reach 50 km/h during the morning hours and intensify to 60 km/h through the afternoon, making for a notably windy day across Durham Region.

Despite the gusty conditions, temperatures will remain pleasant with a high around 25 C expected in the Durham area. The UV index is forecast at 8, which Environment Canada classifies as very high, so residents spending time outdoors should take appropriate sun protection measures including sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses.

The May 29 wind gusts are the result of a pressure gradient between a departing weather system and an approaching high-pressure ridge, a pattern that commonly produces strong southwesterly winds across the Lake Ontario shoreline communities including Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, and Oshawa.

Friday night will bring clear skies into the evening but winds are expected to persist, with gusts remaining up to 60 km/h before gradually subsiding overnight. The overnight low will drop to around 9 C, a significant 15-degree swing from the daytime high that residents should keep in mind for evening plans.

Looking ahead to the weekend, Saturday will be noticeably cooler with a high of 20 C across the GTA and Durham Region. Sunday temperatures are expected to rebound to around 22 C, offering a pleasant end to the weekend with calmer wind conditions anticipated.

For Durham Region gardeners and farmers, the windy and dry conditions Friday could increase evaporation rates significantly. Those with newly planted gardens or container plants may want to check soil moisture levels and water appropriately, as the combination of warmth, low humidity, and strong winds can dry out soil faster than expected at this time of year.

Drivers are advised to exercise caution on exposed roadways and highways, particularly on the 401 and 407 through Durham where crosswinds can make driving high-profile vehicles more challenging during gusty conditions. Cyclists and pedestrians on waterfront trails should also be prepared for the strong winds, especially along the Lake Ontario shoreline in Pickering and Ajax.

The windy conditions may also cause minor disruptions to outdoor activities and events scheduled for Friday across Durham Region. Residents planning yard work, outdoor dining, or recreational activities should secure loose items such as patio furniture, umbrellas, and garbage bins ahead of the gusty conditions.

Environment Canada does not currently have any weather warnings or alerts in effect for Durham Region, though the agency notes that wind gusts of this magnitude can occasionally cause isolated power outages from downed tree branches. Residents are encouraged to monitor conditions throughout the day and check with their local utility provider if outages occur.

The temperature swing between the warm afternoon and cool evening is also a reminder that late spring weather in Durham can shift quickly. Layering clothing and keeping a jacket handy for evening activities is recommended, especially for families attending outdoor events or sports practices Friday evening.
