A horror-themed coffee shop in Courtice is creating space for meaningful conversations about death, grief, and life through its monthly Death Café events.
Hosted at Coffin Creek Café, the gatherings are led by certified death doula Christine Smith, whose work focuses on supporting individuals and families as they navigate end-of-life planning, grief, and the emotional realities surrounding death.
Unlike traditional counselling sessions, Death Cafés provide a relaxed, informal environment where participants can openly discuss topics related to mortality over a cup of coffee. Smith describes the events as welcoming and non-judgmental, attracting people from diverse backgrounds and life experiences.
Participants include individuals coping with recent loss, those experiencing anticipatory or prolonged grief, people supporting loved ones, professionals in social work and therapy, and others who are simply curious about death and dying. Attendance has ranged from three to eight people per session since the first event was held in September, with the next scheduled for January 20.
Smith says the conversations are not sombre, but often uplifting. While the topics are serious, participants frequently express relief and a sense of connection after sharing openly in a supportive setting.
Coffin Creek Café’s unique horror-inspired décor — described as dark yet warm and amusing — helps normalize discussions around death in an unexpected but comfortable environment. Attendees typically gather on couches arranged face-to-face, encouraging connection and dialogue.
Smith brings a strong professional background to the role, with experience in health care and certifications in mental health first aid and workplace mental health leadership. She became a certified death doula through a year-long hospice association program that includes intensive training, supervised studies, and hands-on practicum work.
Café franchisee and minority owner Arielle Burton says the Death Cafés have grown in popularity since their launch, offering the community a safe space to explore conversations that are often avoided.
Coffin Creek Café, located on King Street East in Courtice, has seen steady business growth since its rebrand from Deadly Grounds Coffee. The company prides itself on being fully Canadian, with all coffee roasted, packaged, and brewed in Canada. The café experienced a surge in popularity after going viral on TikTok in October.
Coffin Creek Café is open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Mondays and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.
