Major Traffic Alert: Eastbound Highway 401 On-Ramp at Brock Road Closing for Six Months, Commuters in Pickering and the surrounding Durham Region are being advised to brace for significant delays as a critical piece of highway infrastructure prepares to go offline. Starting April 15, 2026, the Highway 401 on-ramp at Brock Road (eastbound) will close entirely for a six-month overpass rehabilitation project. The closure is expected to remain in place until September, fundamentally shifting traffic volumes onto neighboring arterial roads and alternative highway access points.
Rehabilitation Project Details
The project, spearheaded by the Ministry of Transportation (MTO), has entered “Stage 4.” This phase is a complex undertaking that involves structural work on the east side of Brock Road, the CN overpass, and the Highway 401 bridge structure itself.
While the City of Pickering is not leading the construction, municipal officials have been proactive in alerting residents. The MTO stated the work is essential to “maintain critical transportation infrastructure” and ensure the long-term safety of one of the province’s busiest regional corridors. To prepare for the full closure, nightly shutdowns from midnight to 5:00 a.m. have already commenced this week to allow crews to stage equipment and finalize temporary lane markings.
Navigating the Closure: Detours and Alternatives
With the Highway 401 on-ramp at Brock Road out of commission, thousands of daily commuters will need to find alternative routes to head eastbound toward Ajax and Whitby. The MTO suggests the following primary access points:
-
Whites Road (Pickering): Drivers traveling from west Pickering should utilize the Whites Road on-ramp.
-
Westney Road (Ajax): For those already in the north or east end of Pickering, traveling through local roads to reach the Westney Road interchange in Ajax may be the most efficient detour.
Drivers should expect increased congestion on Bayly Street, Kingston Road, and the 401 collector lanes as traffic redistributes during peak morning and afternoon rush hours.
Potential Project Expansion
The current timeline aims for a September 2026 completion; however, there is a possibility the schedule could shift. Provincial officials are currently reviewing a “scope change” that would add a dedicated northbound Brock Road to eastbound Highway 401 right-turn lane. If approved, this addition would provide long-term congestion relief but could extend the construction window beyond the initial six-month estimate.
This rehabilitation follows an emergency closure on March 29 for concrete repairs, highlighting the urgent need for the comprehensive overhauls now taking place. Residents are encouraged to plan their trips in advance and utilize traffic apps to monitor real-time delays at the Brock Road interchange.
