Durham Regional Police say a firearm and a quantity of drugs were seized after officers conducted a traffic stop in Whitby early Sunday morning.
On Sunday, December 28, at approximately 3:00 a.m., officers from the Central West Division were on proactive patrol near Dundas Street and Brock Street South when they observed a vehicle leaving a private parking lot displaying possible signs of impaired driving.
Police stopped the vehicle and spoke with the driver. While the driver was producing identification and vehicle documents, officers observed a black handgun inside the vehicle. Both the driver and passenger were immediately removed from the vehicle and taken into custody.
A subsequent search of the vehicle led to the discovery of drugs and drug paraphernalia, police said.
Charges Laid
Two Toronto men are facing multiple charges:
- Arshia Khatameh, 21, of Toronto, is charged with:
- Possession of a Prohibited/Restricted Firearm without a Licence
- Possession of a Loaded Prohibited/Restricted Firearm
- Occupying a Motor Vehicle with a Firearm
- Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking (Cocaine)
- Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking (Oxycodone)
- Jalen Bailey, 22, of Toronto, faces the same charges.
Both individuals were held for bail hearings, police said.
