A tragic fire that tore through downtown Bowmanville in March 2025 remains one of the most heartbreaking events of the year for the community.
The blaze ignited around midnight on March 6 inside a third-floor residential unit at 71 King Street West. Fanned by conditions in the tightly packed historic core, the fire spread rapidly to neighbouring buildings, ultimately damaging and destroying multiple properties between 69 and 95 King St. W.
As firefighters battled the flames into the morning hours, Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster expressed the community’s grief, calling the incident devastating for residents and business owners alike. He emphasized the municipality’s commitment to supporting those affected as they worked to recover from the loss of homes, livelihoods and a cherished part of Bowmanville’s downtown.
Quick action by neighbours helped save lives. More than 30 residents managed to escape safely, many fleeing with only the clothes they were wearing when the fire broke out. Emergency crews and local organizations later stepped in to assist those displaced.
Tragically, the fire claimed the life of 54-year-old Kelli Jean Faris, a resident of the unit where the blaze began. Initially reported missing, her death was later confirmed after investigators from the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office recovered her body from the building.
The fire not only resulted in a loss of life but also left a lasting scar on Bowmanville’s historic downtown, marking a somber chapter in Durham Region’s 2025 news history
