Parents across Durham Region are being reminded to complete kindergarten enrolment for the 2026 school year before the June 1 deadline to ensure a smooth start for their children in September.

School boards in Durham are encouraging families to register early, as this allows schools to properly plan for staffing, classroom sizes, and resources ahead of the new academic year. It also ensures that parents and students can connect with teachers and school staff before summer closures begin.

Children entering junior kindergarten must be four years old or turning four by December 31, 2026, while those entering senior kindergarten must be five years old or turning five by the same date. These age requirements are standard across Ontario and help determine eligibility for each level of early education.

Parents can complete the enrolment process online, making it easier and more convenient than ever. Registration is currently open not only for kindergarten students but also for any students who are new to a school board, regardless of grade level.

In Durham Region, families have multiple school board options depending on their location and preference. Students can register through the Durham District School Board (DDSB) or the Durham Catholic District School Board (DCDSB). For those living in Clarington, registration may also be completed through the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board (KPR) or the Peterborough Victoria Northumberland and Clarington Catholic District School Board (PVNCCDSB).

Officials stress that enrolling before June 1 is important because schools are typically closed during the summer months, which can delay the process if registration is left too late. Early registration helps ensure that children are placed in the appropriate classes and that families receive important information about the upcoming school year.

Starting kindergarten is a major milestone for both children and parents. Schools often provide orientation opportunities, welcome materials, and communication with educators ahead of the first day. Registering early gives families access to these resources and helps children feel more prepared and comfortable when they begin school in September.

Education officials also note that early enrolment supports better planning across the school system, allowing boards to allocate teachers, support staff, and classroom space effectively.

Parents are encouraged to visit their respective school board websites to begin the registration process and review any required documents, such as proof of age, residency, and immunization records.

With the deadline approaching, Durham Region families are advised not to delay, ensuring their children are fully registered and ready for a successful start to the 2026–2027 school year.
