Students in Durham Region are being given a unique opportunity to turn their business ideas into reality through the Summer Company program offered by the Business Advisory Centre Durham (BACD). The initiative is designed to support young entrepreneurs by providing funding, mentorship, and hands-on experience in running a business.

Applications for the program are now open and will be accepted until April 30, 2026. The program is open to students between the ages of 15 and 29 who are currently attending school and plan to return in the fall. It aims to empower youth in Durham Region, including those in Whitby, Oshawa, Ajax, and surrounding communities, to explore entrepreneurship as a viable career path.

Successful applicants can receive up to $3,000 in funding, along with access to training, coaching, and mentorship from experienced professionals at BACD. The program is funded by Ontario’s Ministry of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade, ensuring participants receive structured support throughout their entrepreneurial journey.

The Summer Company program runs from June through Labour Day (September 7, 2026), during which participants are expected to dedicate an average of 35 hours per week to building and managing their business. High school students must complete at least eight consecutive weeks, while post-secondary students are required to commit to 12 weeks.

Participants will gain valuable real-world experience by launching and operating their own business from start to finish. This includes developing marketing strategies, managing sales, handling finances, and learning essential business operations such as bookkeeping. These practical skills not only help students succeed in their ventures but also prepare them for future careers in any field.

To qualify, applicants must meet specific eligibility criteria. They must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents living in Ontario and must not be working another job or attending school for more than 12 hours per week during the program. Additionally, applicants must be starting a new business and should not have previously received funding through the Summer Company program.

For students under the age of 18, a parent or guardian’s signature is required as part of the application process.

The program plays a key role in fostering innovation and economic growth within Durham Region by encouraging young people to develop entrepreneurial skills early in life. It also helps build confidence, independence, and problem-solving abilities among participants.

With rising interest in entrepreneurship among youth, initiatives like BACD’s Summer Company program are becoming increasingly important in supporting the next generation of business leaders.

Students interested in applying or learning more about eligibility requirements are encouraged to visit the official BACD website before the deadline.
