The Durham fall battery collection runs October 5 to 9 for residents with curbside service.
The Region of Durham says accepted batteries should be sealed in a clear zipper bag and placed on top of the green bin on the regular collection day. Tape both ends of lithium, button-cell and nine-volt batteries.
Accepted batteries and safety
Standard A, AA, AAA, C and D batteries, six-volt and nine-volt batteries, button cells and rechargeable packs are accepted. Automotive, industrial, damaged, leaking and wet-cell batteries must go to a waste facility.
Batteries do not belong in garbage or blue boxes because crushed lithium batteries can ignite and heavy metals can harm the environment. Durham Radio News says nearly 1.2 million pounds have been diverted since 2012.
Anyone missing the Durham fall battery collection can use a regional waste facility free.
