An Oshawa city councillor has addressed public speculation following a heavy police presence in the area of Wentworth Street West and Oxford Street late last week.
On Friday, Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) issued an advisory warning residents of a large police presence in the area due to an ongoing investigation, asking the public to avoid the location. Police later confirmed the area had been cleared but provided no further details until Sunday evening.
Ward 5 Oshawa and Durham Regional Councillor Brian Nicholson clarified that the incident was not a hostage situation, contrary to rumours circulating on social media.
According to Nicholson, the situation involved a domestic dispute that resulted in an individual barricading themselves inside an apartment unit. He stated that police secured the area promptly and worked to resolve the situation safely and without injury.
In a social media post, Councillor Nicholson also urged residents to refrain from spreading misinformation, calling on those sharing false rumours to remove their posts and discouraging negative commentary about the community and its residents.
