Bowmanville, ON — Clarington residents gathered at the Garnet B. Rickard Recreation Complex earlier this month for the annual Mayor’s Levee, a free community event marking the start of the New Year.

The afternoon gathering offered families and residents an informal setting to meet Mayor Adrian Foster along with members of local and regional council. Attendees were invited to discuss community issues, share ideas and connect with elected representatives in a relaxed environment.

In addition to civic engagement, the event featured a wide range of family activities. Children enjoyed inflatables, face painting and henna art, while public skating on Pad B kept the arena busy throughout the afternoon. Live entertainment, hot chocolate and community group displays rounded out the program, creating a steady flow of visitors across all ages.

The Mayor’s Levee has long been part of Canadian New Year traditions, providing municipal leaders and residents an early opportunity to reflect on the previous year and look ahead to local priorities. Clarington’s version embraced that tradition while maintaining a family-friendly atmosphere.

The choice of venue also carried local significance. The Garnet B. Rickard Recreation Complex, named after former Mayor Garnet Rickard, continues to serve as a central hub for community recreation, large events and municipal gatherings.

Residents and community organizations described the levee as a welcome start to the year, offering both social connection and a chance to engage directly with decision-makers without formal barriers.
