Clarington Accessible Parking is a new initiative being explored by the Clarington council to provide better access to parking for drivers with accessible parking permits.

On Jan. 26, the Clarington council approved a motion by Councillor Corinna Traill, representing the municipality’s accessibility advisory committee. The motion recommends amendments to the traffic bylaw to exempt individuals with accessible permits from paying for on-street or off-street parking, aiming to improve Clarington accessible parking options for residents with mobility challenges.

The proposal also includes increasing the time limit for on-street residential parking to six hours for those with accessible parking permits, addressing a growing need for fairer access to parking spaces in Clarington.

Councillor Traill explained that the changes aren’t about increasing service levels but about “evening the playing field” for individuals with accessibility needs. She emphasized that the new on-street parking time limits would improve flexibility for permit holders while considering broader city needs.

However, Clarington staff raised concerns about the immediate impact on winter operations, particularly regarding snow clearing. Deputy CAO Lee-Ann Reck expressed worries that extending parking times could complicate snow removal efforts.

Despite these concerns, Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster expressed confidence that residents would understand the limits during winter events, ensuring that common sense prevails.

The motion has been approved, and further discussions will continue to refine the details for Clarington Accessible Parking.
