For many newcomers, one of the biggest challenges after arriving in Canada is determining whether they are eligible to work in their chosen profession. Licensing rules, regulatory bodies and credential assessment requirements can be complex and vary depending on the field. AQIS advisors provide one-on-one support to guide clients step-by-step through these processes. They review academic documents, professional certifications and employment histories, offering tailored advice based on each individual’s background.

The service is especially valuable for individuals in regulated professions such as healthcare, engineering, accounting, education and skilled trades. Advisors explain what examinations, licensing applications or bridging programs may be required to practice in Ontario. They also clarify how long the process might take and what costs may be involved, allowing clients to plan realistically.

In addition to helping with credential recognition and licensing pathways, AQIS supports clients in exploring alternative career options. If entering a regulated profession immediately is not feasible, advisors can suggest related occupations where existing skills and international experience may still be valuable. This helps newcomers identify practical employment opportunities while continuing to work toward long-term career goals.

Common questions addressed during AQIS appointments include whether an individual is qualified to work in their profession in Canada, how to get foreign academic credentials officially recognized, what additional training may be necessary, and whether it is possible to fast-track certification. Advisors also discuss how to leverage international experience in job applications and interviews within the Canadian context.

The weekly AQIS service at the Oshawa Welcome Centre plays a key role in workforce integration across Durham Region. By providing accurate, up-to-date information and personalized guidance, the program reduces uncertainty and empowers newcomers to make informed decisions about their professional futures.

Through practical advice, resource connections and individualized planning, AQIS in Oshawa helps internationally trained professionals move closer to meaningful employment and successful career transitions in Canada.
