Southern Ontario is bracing for more severe Storm Could Hit winter weather this week, with Environment Canada issuing a weather alert for Friday, February 20, 2026. Parts of southern Ontario are currently experiencing a winter storm, and another storm system could bring significant precipitation to the region as the workweek concludes.
On Wednesday, February 18, the region has already been impacted by freezing rain, snow, and ice pellets. However, Friday’s storm is expected to intensify, with a mix of freezing rain, snow, and rain across different parts of southern Ontario. According to the significant weather outlook issued by Environment Canada, the storm could cause hazardous travel conditions, with ice accumulation and localized flooding in some areas.
For regions within the Greater Golden Horseshoe and southwestern Ontario, including Durham, the weather forecast is particularly concerning. The storm is expected to begin on Friday morning with freezing rain, transitioning to rain by the afternoon. Areas around Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, and other parts of Durham could see ice build-up of 10 to 15 mm, with the potential for flooding in low-lying areas. Local authorities are urging residents to be cautious and prepare for icy surfaces that could lead to accidents and travel disruptions.
Further north in the Greater Golden Horseshoe, particularly around Oshawa and Whitby, freezing rain is expected to transition into snow by the evening. Environment Canada is predicting 4 to 8 cm of snowfall in these regions, which could affect evening travel and reduce visibility.
As the storm moves into central and eastern Ontario, including the Ottawa area, snow is expected to start Friday afternoon, with 5 to 10 cm of snow accumulation in some areas. For areas closer to Georgian Bay and Manitoulin Island, heavy snow and freezing rain are expected, with 10 to 15 cm of snow likely to accumulate by the end of the day.
Environment Canada has also issued advisories for strong winds that could create localized blowing snow, further reducing visibility and making driving conditions hazardous. Residents are advised to stay updated on weather conditions and to take necessary precautions when traveling, as road conditions will likely deteriorate throughout the day.
With this storm expected to affect Durham Region, Oshawa, Whitby, and surrounding areas, Durham Regional Police have warned motorists to exercise extra caution on roads. Drivers are advised to slow down, clear snow and ice from their vehicles, and give themselves plenty of extra time to reach their destinations.
The combination of freezing rain, snow, and strong winds means the end of the workweek will be challenging for commuters and residents alike. Local authorities are urging people to remain informed and stay prepared for difficult driving conditions and possible delays to transportation services.
