Durham Regional Police have charged a 26-year-old man after he allegedly attempted to evade a RIDE checkpoint and fled from officers on foot in Newcastle, within the Municipality of Clarington.
Police say that on Saturday, December 20, at approximately 10:00 p.m., officers assigned to the RIDE Unit observed a vehicle that appeared to intentionally avoid the checkpoint. Shortly afterward, the vehicle was found abandoned in the parking lot of a Clarington fire station.
With the assistance of the AIR1 helicopter unit, officers conducted a search of the surrounding area and located the driver running through a nearby field. The suspect was taken into custody without incident.
During the search, AIR1 also helped locate the suspect’s vehicle keys and a quantity of cocaine that police believe was discarded while the suspect was fleeing.
The accused, a 26-year-old man from St. Catharines, has been charged. Police did not confirm whether he was held for bail or released on an undertaking. Additional details are available through Durham Regional Police.
