The Durham Regional Police Service is turning to the community for assistance in a cold case involving a high-value retail robbery. Investigators are searching for a specific Pickering mall cell phone thief responsible for a brazen smash-and-grab that occurred at a prominent local shopping center. While the incident took place late last year, detectives from the West Crime Team are renewing their appeal for witnesses and digital evidence to help close the file on this significant electronics theft that has impacted the local business community.

The Kiosk Breach at Pickering City Centre

The incident in question occurred on the morning of October 20, 2025. At approximately 8:30 a.m., before the majority of shoppers had arrived for the day, a lone suspect targeted the Freedom Mobile kiosk located within the Shops at Pickering City Centre. The Pickering mall cell phone thief managed to bypass security measures and break into several locked storage cabinets. Once inside the inventory cache, the male suspect reportedly made off with a large quantity of smartphones and other high-end electronic devices before fleeing the scene.

Despite the mall’s extensive surveillance network, the suspect managed to escape the premises before security or police could intervene. The West Crime Team has spent months reviewing footage and following leads, but the identity of the Pickering mall cell phone thief remains unconfirmed. Police hope that by re-releasing the suspect’s description, someone who may have seen him in the parking lot or was offered cheap electronics for sale shortly after the crime will come forward.

Suspect Description and Search for Evidence

The individual sought in connection with this robbery is described as a male with a brown complexion, aged between 30 and 40 years old. He has a medium build and was sporting a distinct black goatee at the time of the offense. On the morning of the theft, he was seen wearing a grey baseball-style hat, a black shirt, grey pants, and grey shoes.

The DRPS is specifically looking for anyone who might have dashcam footage from the Pickering City Centre parking lot between 8:00 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. on the day of the crime. Even the smallest piece of information could be the key to identifying the Pickering mall cell phone thief and recovering the stolen property.

A Hotspot for Mobile Retail Crime

The urgency of this appeal is highlighted by a separate incident at the exact same kiosk earlier this week. In a completely unrelated case of fraud, a 21-year-old man was arrested on April 7, 2026, for attempting to purchase multiple devices using fraudulent identification. This trend of targeting mobile kiosks has prompted a broader discussion regarding retail security in the region.

Anonymous tips can also be submitted through Durham Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). By working together, residents and law enforcement can ensure that local businesses remain safe from persistent retail theft.
