Transit users in the Durham Region have reason to celebrate as Metrolinx confirms a massive boost to its schedule for the summer of 2026. To accommodate the influx of international visitors and local supporters for the FIFA World Cup, GO trains will run significantly more often on the Lakeshore East and West lines. From June 10 to July 5, 2026, trains will operate every 15 minutes during peak tournament periods, ensuring that fans from Pickering to Oshawa can reach the matches without the stress of gridlock.

Major Boost to the Lakeshore East Line

The Lakeshore East line, which serves the heart of the Durham Region, is a critical component of the World Cup transit plan. Metrolinx has announced a nearly 30 per cent increase in weekly trips compared to the previous winter season, totalling nearly 3,000 weekly journeys across the network.

For Durham residents, this means:

  • 15-Minute Frequency: Reduced wait times at stations like Whitby, Ajax, and Oshawa.

  • Direct Access: Frequent service specifically timed for Toronto’s six match days, providing seamless transport to Exhibition GO Station, which is steps away from the stadium.

  • Extended Connections: Enhanced GO bus service to help visitors and locals explore the broader region between matches.

Toronto Match Schedule and Fan Zones

The World Cup matches in Toronto will be held at “Toronto Stadium” (Exhibition Place), with the FIFA Fan Festival taking place nearby at Fort York. The 15-minute GO trains schedule is designed to support the following matches:

  • June 12: Canada vs. Bosnia and Herzegovina

  • June 17: Ghana vs. Panama

  • June 20: Germany vs. Cote d’Ivoire

  • June 23: Croatia vs. Panama

  • June 26: Senegal vs. Iraq

  • July 2: Round of 32 Match (Teams TBD)

Travel Beyond the Pitch

The service expansion isn’t just for soccer fans. The increased frequency of GO trains will benefit everyday commuters and local travellers who may find themselves dealing with increased road congestion during the tournament. Additionally, the UP Express will see extended hours to support late-night travel to and from Pearson Airport, a move that will assist Durham residents returning from international travel during this period.

“No matter who you’re rooting for or how far you’ve travelled, the entire Metrolinx team is here to make the fan experience in Toronto unforgettable,” provincial officials stated on Tuesday. Detailed schedules are expected to be released via the GO Transit website in the coming weeks. For those in Clarington or Scugog, these transit improvements represent the most efficient way to participate in the biggest sporting event in the country’s history.
