Both the Durham District School Board (DDSB) and the Durham Catholic District School Board (DCDSB) have confirmed closures for Good Friday (April 3, 2026) and Easter Monday (April 6, 2026).

Parents and students alike are welcoming the opportunity for a short break as the school year moves into its final stretch. With exams and end-of-year assessments approaching in June, this holiday provides a chance for students to unwind before entering a busy academic period.

In addition to the Easter closures, both school boards have outlined other key dates for the remainder of the school year. Upcoming Professional Activity (PA) days include April 17 for all schools, followed by additional dates in June that vary between elementary and secondary schools. These PA days are designated for teacher training and administrative planning, meaning students will not attend classes on those days.

Secondary school students should also note that their final summative evaluation period, often referred to as exams, is scheduled between June 17 and June 23. These dates are important for academic planning, particularly for graduating students or those preparing for post-secondary education.

For families relying on school transportation, Durham Student Transportation Services has reminded parents to check bus schedules and updates through their online portal or automated phone system. Transportation services will not operate during school closures, so families should plan accordingly.

With the Durham Region schools closed Easter weekend, there are also plenty of opportunities for families to make the most of the holiday. Local organizations and businesses are offering a variety of seasonal activities, including Easter egg hunts, parades, and family-friendly events across the region.

Parents looking to keep their children active and engaged can explore events listed by Durham Tourism, which highlights activities suitable for all ages. From outdoor celebrations to creative workshops, there are many ways to enjoy the holiday weekend.

For those who prefer a more relaxed celebration, local cafés and eateries across Ajax, Whitby, and surrounding areas are offering festive treats. Popular options include Easter-themed pancakes, mini egg lattes, and seasonal desserts that bring a touch of holiday spirit to the community.

The Durham Region schools closed Easter weekend break not only provides a pause from academic routines but also encourages families to connect and participate in local events. As spring begins to take hold, the long weekend offers the perfect chance to enjoy both indoor and outdoor activities.

Students will return to school on Tuesday, April 7, ready to continue their academic journey through the remainder of the school year.
