Residents in Durham Region will soon have the opportunity to review and comment on a major development proposal that could significantly reshape part of Ajax, as plans for a twin 53 storey high-rise project on Westney Road South move forward.
The proposed development at 190 Westney Road South in Ajax would feature a large mixed-use building consisting of two 53-storey towers connected by a nine-storey podium, creating a structure with an overall height of 62 storeys.
If approved, the project would introduce approximately 1,254 residential units, along with hotel room suites and more than 55,000 square feet of commercial space, bringing new housing, business opportunities, and increased density to the area.
The development proposal comes from 190 Westney Holdings Ltd. and forms part of ongoing growth plans within the GO Station Mixed Use planning area, which is expected to support higher-density residential and commercial development near transit infrastructure.
Town officials say residents will have a chance to share their thoughts during an upcoming public meeting scheduled for March 23 at 1 p.m. in the Ajax Council Chambers on Harwood Avenue.
The meeting will also be live-streamed online at ajax.ca/live, allowing residents who cannot attend in person to follow the discussion.
Those wishing to speak directly about the proposal can attend the meeting without pre-registering if they plan to appear in person. Residents who prefer to participate remotely can arrange electronic participation by contacting clerks@ajax.ca before noon on March 20.
Written comments can also be submitted by email to planningservices@ajax.ca or through the town’s online development portal.
According to planning documents, the development application includes a request for an Official Plan Amendment, which would allow for certain site-specific adjustments to current planning regulations.
These adjustments include minor changes to maximum tower floor plate size, tower separation distances, building density limits, gross floor area allowances, and new minimum parking requirements.
The project site is located directly across the street from another major proposal currently under consideration in Ajax.
That separate development at 275 Westney Road South involves a plan for five towers each reaching up to 60 storeys, along with more than 20,000 square feet of ground-floor commercial space.
A public meeting for that proposal was held last month, highlighting the rapid growth and redevelopment taking place in this area of Ajax.
Urban planners say developments near GO transit stations are part of a broader strategy to support transit-oriented communities, where residents can live, work, and access public transportation within close proximity.
Supporters of such projects often point to the need for increased housing supply and mixed-use neighbourhoods, while critics sometimes raise concerns about traffic congestion, infrastructure capacity, and neighbourhood character.
The upcoming public meeting will give Ajax residents an opportunity to review the details of the proposal and share feedback before any final planning decisions are made.
Additional information about the proposed development can be found through the Town of Ajax development portal, where residents can review planning documents and submit comments before the deadline.
