Officers from Central East Division responded to reports of an assault at the school. Police say two male youths were involved in a physical altercation when one of the youths used bear spray against the other.

The victim was sprayed during the confrontation, causing contamination inside the school building.

When officers arrived at the scene shortly after the incident, they located both the suspect and the victim. The suspect was taken into custody without incident.

As a result of the Oshawa School Bear Spray Assault, both the suspect and the victim required medical attention. Authorities confirmed that both individuals were treated for minor injuries and exposure to the bear spray.

Due to the chemical contamination caused by the spray, students and staff were evacuated from the school building while authorities responded to the situation.

Police have charged a 17-year-old male from Whitby in connection with the incident. Because the accused is a youth, his identity cannot be released under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

The teen is facing the following charges:

  • Assault with a Weapon

  • Administer Noxious Substance

After being charged, the accused was released on an Undertaking while the case proceeds through the legal system.

Durham Regional Police continue to investigate the Oshawa School Bear Spray Assault and are asking anyone who may have information about the incident to come forward.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Constable Henry of Central East Division at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 1701.

Anonymous tips can also be submitted through Durham Regional Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or submitting information online at www.durhamregionalcrimestoppers.ca.

Police say information from witnesses or anyone with video, photos, or additional details about the altercation may assist investigators as they continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
