A Courtice development woodpeckers concern has been raised after a resident reported spotting nesting pileated woodpeckers near a proposed development site in the community.
Courtice resident Desmond Lightbody addressed Clarington councillors during a January 19 planning meeting, highlighting the presence of the birds near his property at the intersection of Nash Road and Townline Road North, adjacent to the planned development area.
While pileated woodpeckers are not considered endangered, their nesting sites are protected under Ontario provincial law, prompting calls for caution as development plans move forward.
Lightbody urged council to carefully consider the environmental impact of the project, noting the importance of protecting local wildlife habitats while balancing growth and development in the area.
No decisions regarding the development or potential mitigation measures were made during the meeting.
