A 47-year-old woman was airlifted to hospital with serious, life-altering injuries after being struck while attempting to help at the scene of a crash in Beaverton early New Year’s Day.
Durham police say the incident happened around 3 a.m. on January 1 on Regional Road 23, north of Thorah Concession Road 2. The woman had stopped her Dodge pickup truck to assist a Dodge minivan that had previously left the roadway.
While rendering assistance, a northbound Mazda sedan struck the woman, pinning her against her pickup truck. The Mazda then collided with the disabled minivan before coming to rest in a ditch.
The injured woman was transported by Air ORNGE to a Toronto-area trauma centre, where police say she remains in stable condition. The Mazda driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators.
The Durham Regional Police Service Collision Investigation Unit has taken over the investigation, which remains ongoing.
