In a proactive move to keep pace with rapid population growth, the Town of Whitby has successfully acquired over 60 hectares (approximately 150 acres) of land for a future outdoor sports hub. Located on the east side of Duffs Road, north of Brawley Road, this expansive site is earmarked to become a premier destination for field sports in the Durham Region. The preliminary design for the complex includes a high-capacity layout: six baseball diamonds, six soccer fields, and two full-size cricket pitches. This acquisition is a strategic response to the Town’s Parks and Recreation Master Plan, which identified a critical need for expanded field capacity to support local sports organizations.
Mayor Elizabeth Roy described the land acquisition as an “exciting step forward” in building a connected community. The project follows the momentum of the near-complete Fieldgate Sports Complex and aligns with Whitby’s Community Strategic Plan to invest heavily in green space and recreation. By securing this land now, the Town is ensuring that as North Whitby continues to develop, residents will have immediate access to high-quality athletic facilities. The site was specifically chosen for its significant size and its flexibility to accommodate multiple types of sports fields in a single, centralized location.
The development of the 60-hectare Whitby sports field will follow a multi-phase, multi-year approach. Construction timelines will be dictated by the Town’s growth and budget cycles, ensuring that the financial burden is spread out as the community’s needs evolve. Matt Gaskell, Whitby’s Chief Administrative Officer, noted that this phased approach allows the Town to “build thoughtfully” while aligning with available funding. A draft site concept has already been released, providing a glimpse into how the massive acreage will be utilized to balance active sports fields with potential natural heritage preservation.
Community engagement will be a cornerstone of the next phase of the project. The Town plans to host a series of consultations with residents and local sports user groups to refine the final design, amenities, and specific programming for the site. This input will be vital in determining the placement of ancillary features such as parking, lighting, washroom facilities, and potentially spectator seating. As cricket, soccer, and baseball continue to see record-high participation rates across the region, this complex is expected to alleviate the current “field shortage” that has forced many local clubs to limit their intake.
While the project is still in its early conceptual stages, the acquisition of such a large parcel of land represents a significant milestone for Whitby’s northern expansion.
