Residents across Durham Region and the GTA can travel for free on New Year’s Eve, thanks to complimentary transit service announced by Metrolinx and Durham Region Transit (DRT).
To help people celebrate safely and avoid impaired driving, all DRT buses will operate fare-free from 7 p.m. on December 31 until 4 a.m. on January 1. The free service applies to all regular, holiday, and on-demand DRT routes.
GO Transit customers can also ride for free starting at 7 p.m. on New Year’s Eve until 8 a.m. on New Year’s Day on all GO trains and GO buses. The UP Express will also be free during this period, from 7 p.m. until the end of service.
To accommodate late-night travel, GO Transit will run additional late-night service on the Lakeshore East line, with the final train departing Union Station at 7:20 a.m. on January 1.
PRESTO Reminder
Passengers are encouraged to continue tapping on and off with their PRESTO cards, though no fares will be charged during the free travel window.
