Freezing rain, snow and colder air to take hold across southern Ontario this week

Southern Ontario is in for a turbulent stretch of winter weather, as freezing rain, rain, flurries and colder temperatures are expected to cycle through the region heading into the final days of 2025 and early January.

Sunday Night: Freezing Rain and Rain

Freezing rain is expected to develop Sunday night before changing over to rain and continuing through the evening. Rainfall totals of 20 to 30 millimetres are possible, along with patches of fog that may briefly reduce visibility.

Winds will strengthen overnight, and temperatures are forecast to rise to around 5 C by Monday morning.

Monday and Monday Night: Turning Colder with Flurries

Monday will remain cloudy, with a 40 per cent chance of showers early in the day before transitioning to flurries. Local blowing snow is expected in the afternoon, with about 2 cm of snow accumulation.

Temperatures will fall steadily, reaching –4 C by the afternoon, while wind chill values may make it feel closer to –15 C.

Flurries and blowing snow will continue into Monday night, with an additional 2 cm of snow possible. Overnight lows are expected to dip to –9 C, with wind chills near –19 C.

Midweek Outlook: Persistent Clouds and Snow Chances

  • Tuesday: Cloudy with a 40 per cent chance of flurries. High near –4 C. Overnight lows around –5 C with increasing cloud cover.
  • Wednesday: Cloudy and windy with a 60 per cent chance of snow. High of –3 C. Overnight temperatures will drop sharply to –13 C.
  • Thursday: A mix of sun and cloud with a 30 per cent chance of flurries. High of –7 C. Overnight lows near –8 C.

Late Week and Weekend

  • Friday: Cloudy with a 30 per cent chance of snow. High of –3 C. Overnight lows around –4 C.
  • Saturday: Cloudy with a 30 per cent chance of flurries. Daytime highs near 0 C, before dropping overnight to –8 C, with wind chill values making it feel closer to –16 C.

Residents are advised to prepare for slippery roads, reduced visibility and fluctuating temperatures, and to monitor Environment Canada updates as conditions evolve.
