Environment Canada is warning residents to prepare for hazardous conditions as a strong cold front moves through the region, bringing freezing rain, icy surfaces, and powerful wind gusts.

In a special weather statement issued Monday, the weather agency said strong southwesterly winds are expected to develop in the morning, with gusts reaching 70 to 80 km/h. Winds are forecast to ease later in the evening as they shift to the northwest.

Areas experiencing ice buildup from freezing rain will be particularly vulnerable to the impacts of high winds. Environment Canada cautions that localized power outages are possible, along with potential damage to roofs, fences, tree branches, and temporary structures. Residents are advised to secure loose outdoor items.

Icy Surface Advisory

Earlier in the day, Environment Canada also issued a yellow advisory highlighting the risk of icy roads and walkways. Ice accretion of 2 to 5 millimetres is expected in some areas, particularly along and north of the Highway 407 corridor.

“Roads and walkways will likely become icy and slippery, and icy surfaces may be difficult to detect,” the agency warned.

Motorists and pedestrians are urged to use caution, allow extra travel time, and avoid unnecessary trips where possible as conditions deteriorate.
