Whitby water rescue training is putting firefighters through shore-based and boat exercises at the waterfront as the town prepares its crews for emergencies involving residents and visitors.
The Town of Whitby described the work in an October 26 announcement. Durham Radio News reported on the exercises on October 28. The training is part of Whitby Fire and Emergency Services’ year-round preparation, not a response to a newly reported rescue incident.
Practising the response before an emergency
The exercises concentrate on assessing risks and helping people in distress in the water. Crews practised approaches from the shoreline and from a boat, using throw bags, inflatable rescue craft and other rescue devices.
Communication was another part of the work. The town says firefighters practised how to communicate during an emergency alongside the physical rescue techniques.
Deputy Chief Mike Tucker said the training helps strengthen operational readiness and the level of emergency service available to Whitby residents and visitors. He described officers and firefighters developing the specialized skills needed for both in-water and shore-based rescues.
The announcement does not give the number of participating firefighters or identify a particular incident that prompted the exercises. Its focus is maintaining the capabilities crews may need when a water emergency occurs.
Seasonal reminder for people near the water
The town paired its account of Whitby water rescue training with a reminder that preparation starts before someone leaves shore. It asks people to consider the conditions, understand their own abilities and have suitable safety equipment.
Whitby also recommends wearing a properly fitted lifejacket or personal flotation device when appropriate. The message is particularly relevant as seasons change and conditions around the waterfront can differ from those people encountered earlier in the year.
More information about the town’s fire service and its safety resources is available through Whitby’s official website.
