Durham Transit service changes taking effect October 19 will extend bus routes into new growth areas in Seaton and west Whitby, add weekend service on Route 118 and adjust several evening trips elsewhere in the network.
Durham Region Transit says the updates are part of the first year of improvements under its Driving Durham 2030 Service Strategy. The changes focus on closing service gaps and keeping pace with residential growth.
Seaton routes connect to Highway 407
On weekdays, Route 112 will be extended along Brock Road to the Brock Road and Highway 407 station, where riders can connect with GO Bus service. South of Taunton Road, buses will operate in both directions on Burkholder Drive and Peter Matthews Drive.
Weekend Route 112 service will continue on a one-way Seaton loop, but buses will travel counter-clockwise using Alexander Knox Drive, Peter Matthews Drive and Taunton Road. Those trips will be identified as Route 112B. Three new northbound stops are planned on Burkholder Drive at Peter Matthews Drive, Azalea Avenue and Marathon Avenue.
Route 118 will also be extended to the Brock Road and Highway 407 station, travelling by Whites Road, Sideline 24 and Highway 7. It will no longer serve Burkholder Drive.
Saturday and Sunday service will be introduced on Route 118 between approximately 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., operating every 30 minutes. New stops are listed at Whites Road northbound at Grosbeak Drive and Sideline 24 southbound at Flagship Drive, with more stops to open as development allows safe access.
West Whitby Route 306 extended
Route 306 will be extended in both directions along Coronation Road to Taunton Road, serving the growing west Whitby community. The route will stop operating on Cochrane Road between Dundas Street and Rossland Road.
Nine stops are planned along the extension, including locations on Coronation Road at Rossland, Fruitful, Twin Streams, Beasley and Taunton roads, plus a southbound stop on Des Newman Boulevard at Rossland Road.
DRT notes that On Demand service may be available when the three routes are not operating. Riders can check eligibility through the DRT On Demand app or by contacting 311.
Other schedule adjustments
Several smaller timetable changes also begin October 19. Some weekday Route 410 trips will move by as much as three minutes. Three southbound Route 423B evening trips will be added from Harmony Road and Dyas Avenue to Townline Road and King Street.
The weekday westbound Route 900 trip at 7:24 p.m. will leave two minutes later, while the Route 916 westbound trip at 6:51 p.m. will depart two minutes earlier.
Passengers who use affected routes should check the new schedules before travelling, particularly where stop locations or travel directions are changing.
