Major construction is underway at Durham College Oshawa GO Station, with two additional tracks, upgraded platforms and new pedestrian infrastructure planned as part of a significant expansion of rail capacity in Durham Region.

The Oshawa GO station upgrades are designed to support more frequent service on the Lakeshore East line while preparing the station for the future Bowmanville GO Extension.

Ontario announced the start of major construction on Aug. 26, saying the project is intended to support reliable two-way, all-day GO service and accommodate future passenger growth.

Two new tracks planned at Oshawa GO

A major part of the project involves constructing two new tracks on either side of a new north platform.

The north platform will include a canopy and snow-melting technology, while the existing south platform will be extended and restored.

Metrolinx is also building new east and west pedestrian bridges to improve access around the station, along with a new bus loop. A temporary bus loop will operate during construction so transit connections can continue while work progresses.

Other rail infrastructure will include a new crossover connection to support future Bowmanville Extension operations, retaining walls, drainage and stormwater systems, and foundations and cable infrastructure needed for future electrification.

Station to remain open during construction

Passengers will still be able to use Durham College Oshawa GO Station while the work is underway.

Metrolinx says construction will take place in phases so the station can remain operational. However, commuters should expect temporary adjustments to parking, pedestrian routes, bus operations and access around the station as different portions of the project advance.

Preliminary work at the station began in December 2025 and was completed in August 2026, while the contract for major construction was also awarded this month.

Upcoming work includes site mobilization, construction of the temporary bus loop and utility and rail infrastructure work.

Upgrades support Bowmanville GO Extension

The Oshawa GO station upgrades are closely connected with the larger Bowmanville GO Extension.

That project will add approximately 18.7 kilometres of new track beyond Durham College Oshawa GO Station and extend passenger rail service farther east into Durham Region.

The extension is expected to support nearly 17,000 daily trips and 4.9 million annual boardings by 2041. Metrolinx says riders are expected to eventually receive half-hour service during peak periods, hourly off-peak service and service every two hours on weekends along the extended portion of the line.

The broader project also includes new tracks and signals, bridges and upgrades to road crossings along the route.

More capacity for a growing Durham Region

Ontario says expanding the Oshawa station will help increase rail capacity while improving accessibility and preparing for future service demand.

Durham Regional Chair John Henry said improved transit infrastructure is increasingly important as Durham’s population grows, while Metrolinx President and CEO Michael Lindsay said the project will modernize the station and increase capacity.

The expansion could also have economic benefits for Oshawa by making it easier for commuters, workers and visitors to reach the city.

Future milestones include completion of the new north platform, installation of the additional tracks, opening of the new pedestrian bridges and reconstruction of the existing south platform.

The Oshawa GO station upgrades represent another major step toward expanded GO rail service east through Durham Region and eventually to Bowmanville.
