A Pickering Casino murder suspect has been arrested in Saskatchewan and returned to Durham Region nearly three years after security guard Michael Ferdinand was fatally shot.
Durham Regional Police announced the arrest on Friday, July 31, 2026, saying homicide investigators had located the accused in Saskatoon following an extensive investigation involving several police services.
The accused, now 20, has been charged with second-degree murder and was held for a bail hearing.
His identity cannot be published because he was 17 at the time of the alleged offence and remains protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
Pickering Casino Murder Suspect Arrested in Saskatoon
Durham police said the accused was located and arrested in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
On Wednesday, July 29, members of the Durham Regional Police homicide unit took him into custody and returned him to Durham Region.
Police thanked the Saskatoon Police Service, Calgary Police Service, Vancouver Police Department and Royal Canadian Mounted Police for assisting with the investigation.
Investigators had obtained a Canada-wide arrest warrant after identifying a teenage suspect in the weeks following the shooting.
Security Guard Fatally Shot in 2023
The shooting occurred at approximately 5:05 a.m. on October 9, 2023, at Pickering Casino Resort, located at 888 Durham Live Avenue.
Officers responding to reports of an armed person found 34-year-old Michael Ferdinand suffering from gunshot wounds.
Ferdinand was transported to a Toronto-area trauma centre, where he later died from his injuries.
He was working as a security guard at the casino when the shooting occurred.
Ferdinand’s family described him as a devoted husband, son, brother, friend and dog owner who made the people around him feel valued.
His wife, Mara Abolins, previously said his death had a devastating impact on the family.
Police Previously Released Suspect’s Identity Temporarily
Investigators identified a 17-year-old suspect and obtained a Canada-wide warrant for second-degree murder.
Because the suspect was a youth, his identity was normally protected from publication. Police obtained special judicial authorization to release his name and photograph temporarily in November 2023.
A second temporary authorization was granted in December 2025 as investigators renewed their appeal for information.
Under the court orders, media organizations, police agencies and members of the public were required to remove identifying articles, images and videos five days after each authorization took effect.
Those previous authorizations are no longer active, and the accused must not be identified in current coverage.
Three-Year Search Ends With Murder Charge
Durham Regional Crime Stoppers previously offered a $25,000 reward for information leading to the suspect’s arrest.
Police had also warned that anyone knowingly helping the accused avoid arrest could face criminal charges.
The Pickering Casino murder suspect arrested in Saskatoon is now before the courts on one count of second-degree murder.
The charge and all related allegations have not been proven in court.
