After several days of intense heat, residents across Durham Region can expect more comfortable weather on Sunday, July 5, as temperatures ease while sunny skies return to much of southern Ontario.

According to Environment Canada, the weekend heat wave will begin to subside, bringing daytime highs around 26°C across Durham Region, including Oshawa, Whitby, Ajax, Pickering, Clarington, Brock, Scugog, and Uxbridge. Although temperatures will be lower than previous days, humidity will still make it feel closer to 31°C during the afternoon.

The day is expected to begin under mostly clear skies, with sunrise occurring at 5:38 a.m. Early morning conditions will offer pleasant weather for residents planning outdoor walks, cycling, or other recreational activities before temperatures begin to climb.

Throughout the day, Durham Region is forecast to experience mainly sunny skies, creating favourable conditions for parks, beaches, sporting events, and community activities. While nearby areas such as Mississauga and Brampton may see a mix of sun and cloud, Durham is expected to enjoy more consistent sunshine.

Across Halton Region, temperatures are expected to reach 25°C with a humidex of 31°C, accompanied by increasing afternoon winds of around 20 km/h.

Hamilton faces a slightly different forecast, with mainly cloudy skies, a 40 per cent chance of showers, and the possibility of a thunderstorm during the afternoon. Daytime temperatures there are expected to reach 24°C, feeling closer to 30°C with the humidex.

Despite the cooler air moving into southern Ontario, Environment Canada warns that the UV index will reach 9, classified as very high. Residents spending time outdoors are encouraged to take appropriate precautions against sun exposure.

Health officials recommend applying broad-spectrum sunscreen, wearing sunglasses and lightweight protective clothing, and seeking shade whenever possible during the strongest sunlight between late morning and mid-afternoon. Staying hydrated remains important even as temperatures become more comfortable.

The sun is expected to set at approximately 9:00 p.m., providing another long summer evening for outdoor activities across the region.

As evening approaches, weather conditions are expected to remain pleasant throughout Durham Region. Clear skies are forecast overnight, with temperatures falling to approximately 18°C, creating comfortable sleeping conditions after several nights of oppressive heat.

Elsewhere across southern Ontario, Hamilton may continue to experience partly cloudy skies with a lingering 40 per cent chance of showers and the risk of an early evening thunderstorm before conditions improve overnight. Overnight temperatures there are expected to settle near 19°C.

The cooler forecast will provide welcome relief following several days of extreme heat and heat warnings that affected much of southern Ontario. While humidity will still be noticeable during the afternoon, Sunday’s weather is expected to be significantly more comfortable for residents enjoying outdoor events, sports, and family activities throughout Durham Region.

Environment Canada encourages residents to continue monitoring local weather forecasts, as summer weather patterns can change quickly and isolated showers or thunderstorms remain possible in some parts of the province.
