The City of Oshawa has officially announced the return of its popular Playground Program for the upcoming summer season, providing free recreational opportunities for local children. Presented by the Oshawa Community Credit Union, the program is set to take place in neighborhood parks across the city. Running from July 6 to August 21, the initiative offers a consistent schedule of activities designed to keep youth engaged and active during the summer break. This annual tradition is a highlight for many families, offering a reliable and enriching outlet for energy and creativity right in their own backyards.

Children who attend the program will enjoy a variety of free, supervised activities led by trained Play Leaders. The curriculum includes a diverse mix of games, arts and crafts, and group activities that encourage teamwork and socialization. These daily sessions are structured to provide a fun and inclusive environment where participants can make new friends and develop new skills under the guidance of experienced staff. By fostering social interaction in a low-pressure setting, the program helps build confidence and lasting memories for young residents.

New this year, a significant administrative change has been introduced regarding how children join the program. Advance registration is now required for all participants. Parents and guardians must sign their children up in advance to participate, marking a shift from previous procedures. This new measure ensures that the city can accommodate all attendees safely and efficiently, allowing staff to prepare appropriate resources and maintain safe leader-to-child ratios throughout the season.

To facilitate this new process, the City of Oshawa has directed residents to a dedicated online platform. Parents can view the specific playground locations and complete the registration process by visiting register.oshawa.ca. City staff are encouraging families to register early to secure a place for their children, as the program continues to be a highly sought-after summer option for families in the Oshawa community. Spots are expected to fill quickly, so timely action is recommended to avoid disappointment.

Preparing for outdoor activities is essential for a positive experience, and the city has issued guidelines on what children should bring each day. Parents and guardians are asked to ensure that participants arrive with sunscreen, a hat, and a filled water bottle. These items help protect children from the sun and ensure they remain hydrated throughout the morning or afternoon sessions. Proper footwear is also recommended to ensure safety during active play on park surfaces.

The safety of participants remains a top priority, particularly during periods of extreme weather. In the event that a heat alert is issued, the programming will be adjusted to mitigate risks. Staff will modify the daily schedule to include more shaded and passive activities, along with implementing frequent breaks. These precautions are standard practice to ensure the well-being of all children involved in the outdoor program, ensuring that fun never comes at the cost of health.

The operation of the Playground Program is made possible through valuable community partnerships. The program is offered in collaboration with the organization Their Opportunity, which supports the delivery of services. Additionally, Midway Nissan has stepped in to provide the program vehicles, ensuring that staff and equipment can be transported effectively between various park locations throughout Oshawa. These partnerships highlight the strong spirit of cooperation within the region.

Residents seeking more information about the schedule or specific park locations can visit oshawa.ca/Play. For direct assistance, contact with the Playground Program Staff Office will be available beginning June 15. Families can reach the office by calling 905-436-3311, extension 2033, or by sending an email to playgrounds@oshawa.ca. With summer approaching, the city is prepared to welcome another successful season of free community play.
