The City of Oshawa has officially unveiled the operational blueprint for one of Ontario’s premier signature tourism events, bringing thousands of provincial travelers and local garden enthusiasts into the city’s urban core. According to a formal municipal update published by corporate communications staff on Monday, the celebrated Oshawa Peony Festival 2026 is returning for its 22nd consecutive year, transforming the local civic gardens into a vibrant canvas of international blooms, artisan marketplaces, and fine arts showcases.
Recognized consistently as a “Top 100” event by Festivals and Events Ontario (FEO), the annual celebration highlights the city’s unique horticultural heritage while functioning as a critical economic driver for independent hospitality and retail storefronts across the Durham Region.
Festival Logistics and Campus Layout
The two-day, family-friendly event remains completely free to the general public, removing economic barriers for families looking to take in the sprawling floral displays. Horticultural tourists can organize their weekend itineraries around the following structural parameters:
-
The Operational Timeline: Gates are scheduled to open on Saturday, June 6, and Sunday, June 7, 2026. Daily operational hours will run continuously from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
-
The Festival Footprint: All interactive setups are localized to the campus of the Oshawa Valley Botanical Gardens and the adjacent Children’s Arena property, situated at 155 Arena Street in Oshawa.
The open-air botanical park will showcase an extensive collection of over 300 unique varieties of peonies, anchored by the pristine, mature displays housed within the specialized Michael and Judi Denny Peony Garden. Beyond the natural pathways, the festival grounds will feature a dense matrix of family entertainment, including an open-air artisan marketplace showcasing regional crafters, live multi-cultural musical performances at central stages, interactive children’s activity bays, and an expansive fleet of local food trucks.
Juried Exhibitions and Public Creative Contests
A core element of the 22nd annual layout is the return of the prestigious, high-volume judged competition run in partnership with the Canadian Peony Society. Growers from across the province are preparing to submit upward of 500 individual flower stems to be graded across complex design and species classes—including specialized Tree, Herbaceous, and Intersectional variations. Competitors will also square off in creative design challenges such as Pavé modeling and intricate Crescent Design line arrangements.
Simultaneously, the City of Oshawa is leveraging the Oshawa Peony Festival 2026 to run its annual community art and photography contests:
-
The Fine Arts Judgement: Local creators must drop off their physical, multi-medium artistic interpretations of the peony at the Children’s Arena on Friday, June 5, 2026. Submissions will be divided into Adult and Under-18 Youth brackets, with final winners determined through an on-site public ballot across the weekend.
-
The Digital Photo Sweepstakes: Shutterbugs can submit their best high-resolution images captured on-site during the current blooming season through the city’s online portal. The digital entry window formally opens alongside the festival on June 6 and will accept entries until July 12, 2026.
Municipal event planners are urging residents planning to attend to arrive early at the Arena Street entry gates to secure parking and enjoy the full schedule of interactive workshops, master gardener demonstrations, and floral displays before daily crowds peak.
