Heavy Rain and Gusty Winds Forecast for Durham on Friday

The Durham Region is bracing for a damp and blustery end to the work week as a low-pressure system moves into Southern Ontario. According to the latest update from Environment Canada, residents should prepare for significant precipitation on Friday, April 24, 2026, with some areas potentially seeing up to 15 mm of rainfall by the end of the night. The morning is expected to start with heavy cloud cover and a 60 per cent chance of localized showers in Oshawa, Whitby, and Ajax. Unlike the clear skies seen earlier in the week, this system brings a sustained cooling effect, with daytime highs struggling to reach 11°C.

As the day progresses into the evening, the intensity of the rain is expected to increase. While the heaviest downpours—ranging from 10 mm to 15 mm—are currently modeled for the Niagara and Hamilton corridors, the Durham Region will still experience steady “soaker” conditions through the overnight hours. This rainfall is accompanied by shifting winds; an easterly breeze of 20 km/h is expected during the afternoon, but gusts could accelerate to 30 km/h after midnight. This combination of wind and rain will make for a raw, chilly evening as the overnight low settles around 5°C.

The timing of this weather system is particularly impactful for commuters along the Highway 401 corridor, as reduced visibility and pooling water on the roadways are likely during the Friday afternoon rush. Municipal crews in Pickering and Clarington are monitoring drainage systems to ensure catch basins are clear of spring debris to prevent localized flooding. For those planning outdoor activities, the forecast remains discouraging; the rain is expected to linger well into the night, potentially disrupting local sports practices and evening community events.

Looking further ahead, the Friday rainfall in Ontario serves as a precursor to an unsettled weekend. Saturday maintains a 60 per cent chance of showers with a high of only 10°C, meaning the damp conditions will persist for at least another 24 hours. However, a slight reprieve is on the horizon for Sunday, which is currently forecast to be the pick of the weekend with a mix of sun and clouds and a high of 13°C. For now, residents are advised to keep their umbrellas close and allow for extra travel time as the region navigates this first significant rain event of late April.
