One of Durham Region’s longest-running outdoor traditions returns this weekend as the 56th Annual Canoe the Nonquon takes over the waterways of Port Perry.

The beloved community event runs Saturday, June 6 from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., starting from the Nonquon River and finishing at Lake Scugog in the heart of Port Perry. Now in its 56th year, the race has become a staple of the Scugog Township summer calendar, drawing paddlers of all skill levels from across Durham Region and beyond.

Participants can register to compete in the canoe race, which challenges paddlers to navigate the winding Nonquon River before opening up into the wider waters of Lake Scugog. The scenic route takes competitors through some of the most beautiful natural landscapes in the region, offering a unique perspective of Scugog’s wetlands, forests, and wildlife habitats from the water.

The entry fee for race participants is sixty-six dollars, which helps support the ongoing work of the Scugog Shores Museum Village and Archives, the event’s longtime organizer. The museum has been stewarding this tradition for decades, ensuring that the community connection to the Nonquon River and Lake Scugog remains strong.

For those who prefer to stay on dry land, there will be plenty of activities and food available along the shoreline, making it a great outing for families and spectators alike. The event hub at 121 Queen Street in Port Perry will serve as the gathering point for both participants and visitors throughout the day.

The Canoe the Nonquon is more than just a race. It is a celebration of the community’s deep connection to its waterways and natural heritage. The Nonquon River has been an important transportation route and natural resource for the area since long before Port Perry was established, and the event honours that history while encouraging residents to get outdoors and experience the beauty of Scugog firsthand.

Over the years, the event has grown from a small local gathering into a respected paddling competition that attracts participants from across Ontario. Racers can choose from various categories and distances, making it accessible to both competitive paddlers looking for a challenge and recreational canoeists who simply want to enjoy a beautiful day on the water.

Registration is still open for those interested in participating. More information about the race categories, registration details, and event schedule can be found through the Scugog Shores Museum and the Township of Scugog’s community events listings.

Whether you are paddling or cheering from the shore, the 56th Annual Canoe the Nonquon promises to be a fantastic day of community spirit and outdoor fun in Port Perry.
