Durham Regional Police were involved in several major investigations and high-profile arrests throughout 2025, marking one of the busiest years in recent memory for law enforcement in the region.
Among the most significant cases was the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) laying criminal negligence causing death charges against two Durham police officers following a fatal wrong-way collision on Highway 401 in Whitby.
Another major case unfolded in Ajax, where police dismantled a $2 million fraud and theft operation at an Amazon warehouse. Five individuals — including two employees — were charged in connection with the theft of high-end electronics.
Durham police also made arrests just three weeks after a violent jewelry store robbery in Ajax, where an employee was tied up while thieves made off with $1.4 million in gold, silver and jewelry.
The region was further impacted by violent turf wars in the towing industry, leading to arrests in multiple cases. One investigation involved conspiracy to commit murder charges laid the day after a mass shooting in Scarborough, with Pickering connections.
Rounding out the year was Project Yankee, a large-scale joint investigation involving Durham Police, Toronto Police, York Regional Police and the OPP. The operation resulted in more than 100 criminal charges, including multiple conspiracy to commit murder counts against 10 individuals, two of whom were from Oshawa
