More than 242,000 vehicles across Canada are impacted by two major safety recalls issued this week, affecting popular Jeep and Honda models commonly driven throughout Durham Region.

The recalls, announced by Transport Canada, involve serious safety concerns including fire risk and potential loss of vehicle control. Durham Region drivers who own any of the affected models are being urged to check their vehicle status immediately and contact their local dealership.

Jeep Recall: Fire Risk From Wiring Issue

Fiat Chrysler has recalled certain Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator models from 2021 through 2025 model years due to a wiring issue that could cause a fire — even while the vehicle is parked and turned off.

The problem stems from a loose connection for the electric hydraulic power steering pump, which could overheat and melt, creating a serious fire hazard that has alarmed safety officials across the country.

According to Transport Canada, wiring that overheats and melts can create a fire risk even while the vehicle is parked and turned off, making this a particularly dangerous defect that requires immediate attention from owners.

Affected Jeep models include:

  • Gladiator — 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025
  • Wrangler — 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025

A total of 106,258 vehicles in Canada are affected by this recall. Fiat Chrysler strongly recommends parking affected vehicles outside and away from other vehicles or buildings until repairs have been completed.

Owners will be notified by mail and advised to take their vehicle to a dealership for inspection. All affected parts will be repaired or replaced at no cost to the vehicle owner.

Honda and Acura Recall: Suspension Failure Risk

Honda has issued a recall for several Honda and Acura models due to rusting suspension mounting points on the rear subframe. The corrosion could cause rear suspension components to fail, potentially leading to a complete loss of vehicle control at highway speeds.

According to Transport Canada, the rust issue on certain vehicles could result in poor handling and create the risk of a serious crash, putting drivers, passengers, and others on the road in danger.

Affected Honda and Acura models include:

  • Acura MDX — 2014 through 2020
  • Honda Passport — 2019 through 2023
  • Honda Pilot — 2016 through 2022
  • Honda Ridgeline — 2017 through 2023

This recall impacts 136,260 vehicles across Canada. Honda will notify all affected owners by mail and advise them to visit an authorized dealership for a thorough inspection. Dealers will install a rear subframe reinforcement kit or perform a full subframe replacement if the damage warrants it.

What Durham Region Drivers Should Do Now

If you own any of the affected Jeep or Honda models, you can check your vehicle identification number on the Transport Canada recalls database online or call your local dealership directly. Both recalls will be repaired completely free of charge.

With more than 242,000 vehicles impacted across both recalls combined, many Durham Region families could be driving affected vehicles without knowing it. Durham roads see heavy daily traffic on Highways 401, 407, and local routes throughout Oshawa, Whitby, Ajax, and Pickering, making these safety concerns especially relevant for local commuters.

If you drive one of these models, do not wait for the notification letter in the mail. Check your VIN today and schedule an appointment with your dealership as soon as possible. Your safety and the safety of everyone on Durham Region roads could depend on it.
