A Whitby energy grant worth $25,000 will help North American Steel reduce natural gas use at its local manufacturing plant.
The Town and Enbridge Gas Ontario awarded the funding through the first Industrial Energy Challenge. North American Steel is the pilot program’s inaugural recipient.
The facility makes steel racking and uses industrial ovens to dry and cure powder coating. Whitby says those stages account for about 90 per cent of its natural gas use.
The grant will help install air curtains at the dry-off oven entrance and exit. The equipment is expected to retain heat and remove water before steel enters, reducing annual gas use by up to about seven per cent.
North American Steel has operated in Whitby since 1972. The project is expected to finish in early 2027 and supports the Town’s efficiency and net-zero goals.
