October’s Whitby community recognitions include volunteer honours, a provincial youth softball championship, a donated Peace Tower flag and community tree planting.
The Town thanked the Tomei family for donating a Canadian flag that previously flew from Parliament Hill’s Peace Tower. It is now displayed at the Fieldgate Sports Complex.
VON volunteers honoured
Whitby residents Eva Reti and Joyce Marshall received recognition from VON Canada, a not-for-profit home-care and community-support provider.
Reti received the VON Canada Award of Distinction. Marshall received the organization’s Lifetime Associate Award.
Youth athletes and tree planters
The Whitby Girls Softball Association U9 Select Lightning team completed an undefeated season by winning gold at the provincial championship in September.
The Town also thanked volunteers who joined a LEAF tree planting at Fallingbrook Park on September 26 during National Forest Week. LEAF is marking 30 years of planting, stewardship and public education.
The four Whitby community recognitions appeared in the mayor’s October “Community Builders” section. The source did not provide award criteria, game scores or a count of trees planted.
